At least 21 people, including 19 children, were killed in a shooting at a primary school in the US state of Texas on Tuesday. The ages of the children killed in the second to fourth grades are said to be between seven and ten years.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed the incident, saying the man used a handgun and a rifle.
The incident took place in Ovalde, Texas, during which an 18-year-old man opened fire at Rob Elementary School.
Governor Greg Abbott said the suspect had been “killed” and that reports had surfaced that he had been killed by law enforcement officers who arrived on the scene.
Police have launched an investigation, instructing the public to stay away from the school.
It should be noted that despite the increase in shooting incidents in the United States, such incidents are rarely seen in any primary school where children between the ages of five and 11 are studying.
The attack comes at a time when such violence is on the rise in the United States.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the 18-year-old assailant was a local man who “killed children and a teacher in a horrific and incomprehensible manner.”
According to him, two officers who reached the spot were also injured in the shooting but their condition is out of danger.
According to local American media, the accused also tried to kill a woman before firing at the school. The attacker was a local high school student, according to the BBC’s partner CBS.
The Old School District, about 85 miles west of San Antonio, near the Mexican border, told the BBC that students had been evacuated from the school. Five hundred children were studying in this school.
According to the local hospital, many students are being treated in the emergency service.
The 13 children were brought by ambulance and bus, the Oldy Memorial Hospital said via its Facebook page. Two of them were dead.
The town of Ovalde has a population of about 16,000 and the local high school was to hold its graduation ceremony on Friday.
The number of school shootings in the United States has risen sharply in recent years, with 26 such incidents occurring in the past year alone, according to Edwick, an educational publishing house.
