The primary methodology used in the study is a qualitative case study analysis. The primary objective of this methodology is to ensure that pro-active measures to counter social engineering methods are explored extensively (Turner & Danks, 2014). Before the method was chosen, different other research designs were explored to test their suitability for the study. Some of the research approaches that could have been used were quantitative research methods such as quasi-experimental, phenomenological, and longitudinal. These methods are known to allow for the testing of hypotheses through hard-data predictions. These qualitative approaches are lauded with providing more reliable and quantifiable outcomes. However, the objectives of the study point towards qualitative outcomes hence the selection of qualitative research methods.

Qualitative research is used to gather and analyze nonnumerical data while qualitative research majors on gathering and analyzing numerical data. It is imperative that all researchers identify the differences between the two types of research. It is through identifying the differences that a researcher or a group of researchers can hope to select the best approach for their study. Quantitative research is mainly used to quantify an issue by gathering numerical data that is, in turn, transformed into usable statistics (Harrison, Birks, Franklin, & Mills, 2017). It entails collecting data from a large sample of the population. The research uses more structured data collection techniques such as polls, interviews, longitudinal studies, observations, and surveys. The measurable data collected helps in establishing facts and uncovering patterns associated with the study topic.

On the other hand, qualitative research methods are mostly focused on exploring the different aspects of a problem. It is through this type of research that comprehension of underlying motivations, opinions, and reasons is acquired. This research helps in developing insights into an issue by exploring it from different perspectives. It is through this research method that researchers can uncover new trends in opinions and thoughts about the problem (Tetnowski, 2015). The collection of data is largely unstructured or semi-structured to help in accommodating a wide array of information pertinent to the issue under investigation. The sample size in these types of research is generally small, but research is conducted.

Case study research has grown in recent years to become a prominent and effective method of investigating complex problems in real-world settings. Case study research is aimed at analyzing specific issues within the boundaries of a specific environment (Quinlan et al., 2019). In the study, the case study design helps to ensure that the research conducted is centered within a single field of social engineering in healthcare organizations. Case study research is mainly divided into three categories: exploratory, explanatory, and descriptive.

The exploratory design is aimed at investigating what and who aspects of a problem. The primary data collection methods used here include; experiments, questionnaires, and interviews. It is the primary method used in this particular study (Quinlan et al., 2019). It will aid in ensuring that different aspects of the problem are explored, and a solution developed from the case study. Explanatory case studies help in fulfilling the why and how aspects of a problem in real-world situations (Harrison et al., 2017). Finally, the descriptive case studies are used to analyze the sequence of events over time as pertaining to an issue under investigation. Case studies are vital, especially when used within a qualitative research design, as they allow researchers to use real-world scenarios. This, in turn, aids in the capturing of the different complexities of the phenomena.

The qualitative case study design used in this paper is not widely understood by many. One of the ambiguities associated with this research design is the use of methods and methodology to describe the design. On the one hand, research methods are seen as the techniques and procedures utilized in the collection of data. On the other hand, methodology refers to the researcher(s) point of view and reference upon which the study is built and directed (Harrison et al., 2017). There is a significant need for all researchers using this study design to begin by distinguishing between the two. This distinction will aid in ensuring that both the researchers and readers follow the paper properly and understand the role played by design in the study. The application of case study approaches is based on this understanding.

When expertly applied, the qualitative case study design is seen to provide researchers with numerous benefits. For example, it provides the researchers with opportunities to describe and explore a phenomenon within a set context using different data sources. Through these opportunities, the researchers can explore an organization thoroughly and aid in the deconstruction and reconstruction of different theses. This research methodology is favored in qualitative research due to its vigor and flexibility (Hyett, Kenny, & Dickson-Swift, 2014). It is through the qualitative case study design that a phenomenon is thoroughly investigated, and its different facets are exposed and comprehended.
