Christian Dubé’s men won a decisive fourth victory this Saturday against Lausanne HC. They will play in the semi-finals of the play-offs for the first time since 2014
Fribourg-Gottéron celebrates its victory and its qualification for the play-off semi-finals.
So far, the National League play-offs respect the logic of the regular season: the two best teams over the length of the championship have qualified with flying colors for the semi-finals, while the next four will have to decide between them days.
Between Zurich and Biel (3-3), the seventh meeting on Monday (8 p.m. at the Hallenstadion) will be decisive. The suspense could last until Wednesday between Davos and Rapperswil, where the Saint-Gallois lead 3-2. We will follow all this with relaxation on the Zug side since the reigning Swiss champions easily dominated Lugano (4-0). And we will enjoy some welcome rest in Fribourg, where Gottéron dominated Lausanne 4-1.
The final score of the series is final; its development was much more uncertain. Second in the regular season, Christian Dubé’s men made the difference this Saturday in their lair of the BCF Arena, winning 5-4 after extra time to close the case. This is the third duel between the two French-speaking teams which needs more time to designate its winner.
Last Tuesday, at the end of the night, it took three additional periods for Gottéron to find the opening. This time, club kid Killian Mottet scored the decisive goal after 18 minutes and 12 seconds more.
The local supporters then switched to a happiness of which they had been deprived for a long time. Their team had not reached the semi-finals of the play-offs since 2014. Since then, they have been eliminated three times at the quarters stage and had to settle for the play-outs three times.
The Fribourgeois do not yet know their opponent in the last four, but they know that it will not be Zug, undoubtedly the most formidable team this year again. What let them hope for a little extra stretch of road. Since promotion to the Swiss ice hockey elite in 1980, Gottéron has never won the league title, but the club have reached the final four times in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 2013. That year , it was his great rival, CP Berne, who had been crowned.
