Challenges Gifted Children May Face

Giftedness may seem like a gift to children, but sometimes it comes with challenges. The characteristics of giftedness are not necessarily. Moreover, it is not because a child is gifted that he will necessarily have great success in school or excel in life. Giftedness can help but is not the only factor to consider. Despite above-average capabilities, high-ability kids may not like the academy.

High-ability children may again “mask” their giftedness with complex manners, such as turmoil, impulsivity, or behavioral problems.

Gifted children, however, are more likely to have at least one other condition or disorder.

Because of their very high ability to learn and comprehend, gifted people care to develop difficult personalities. They are also commonly looking for power, complexity, deepness, and meaning in what they do. Motionless, they occasionally have a problem completing their psychological conditions (e.g., need for purpose, stimulation, liberation, self-esteem). This is why some gifted people may suffer from depression or existential depression despite the advantages of their giftedness.

Factors that explain giftedness

Giftedness has a strong hereditary aspect. With its various forms, is often a genetic trait, either inherited from one or both parents. Commands are current from delivery but need a good environment to grow and be identifiable.

However, the family and school environment and the living conditions. In which the child takes place will also greatly influence.

How do you recognize giftedness or high potential in a child?

In the past, giftedness was largely established by measuring a child’s intelligence quotient. But this is no longer the only criterion. Identifying giftedness is a more comprehensive system. Which evaluates other aspects such as growth since early youth. The thirst for forever knowing more, etc.

In public, it is the parents who question giftedness in their kids. However, it also happens that it is the teacher who identifies a gifted child, especially at the beginning of the primary cycle. Speed of learning is easier to compare with their peers than those of older children.

It is an evaluation in psychology or, ideally, in neuropsychology that can establish the presence of giftedness in a child. The more complex the situation, for example. The more important it is to consult specialists who understand both fields well to prevent misdiagnoses.

But one thing is certain: The younger the child, the easier it is to observe giftedness.

Where can kids be considered?

It is possible to obtain an evaluation: in a school service center, by a psychologist, but only if there is a need for the child (notice for an acceleration, academic difficulty, or behavioral problems);
In a CLSC, the waiting lists are long. If the manifestations of giftedness and the special needs of the child are perceptible from early childhood, parents can speak to their family doctor to ask to have their child included on these lists from the age of 3 or 4 years to obtain the service in the first years of his school career;
in a private clinic for psychological assessment and neuropsychology.
Assessment is useful for gaining support at school, but it is also unnecessary. If you think your child has high potential, discuss it first with his teacher or the school administration.
