What are the requirements to study medicine in China?

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) degrees can be obtained from Chinese universities. As it is an undergraduate program it is open to high school graduates who are at least 18 years old.

They must be in good physical and mental health. They should be good students and fluent in English.

How long does it take to obtain a medical degree from a Chinese medical school?

An MBBS in China can be completed in six years. The first year consists of basic courses, while the second and third years are spent learning the basics of medicine. The fourth and fifth years are spent studying clinical medicine. In the final year, students do an internship in China or another country.

  1. Tsinghua University, School of Medicine

Tsinghua University is ranked as the best university in China and one of the most outstanding medical schools in China. Although it was only founded in 2001, it is modeled on Beijing Union Medical College (PUMC), one of China’s most outstanding universities. Founded in 1917, Beijing Union Medical College is based on the American medical school system.

Admission to this, China’s top medical school, is highly competitive and only 90 students are accepted each year. Unlike other schools, Tsinghua University has an eight-year system, the 3+2+3 model, with the first three years dedicated to building a knowledge base. The next two years are dedicated to the education system and the last three years to the challenges of clinical medicine.

  1. Peking University and Health Sciences Centre (HSC)

University Medical College is part of Peking University HSC. It operates together with some campus hospitals and other health facilities. The former Imperial Peking University is a prestigious institution of the C9 League (China’s version of the Ivy League).

Founded in 1902, it was the first medical school in China to adopt the British system. It was thus the first university to teach modern Western medicine to its students.

As part of their six years of clinical medical training, HSC students can practice in any (or all) of the university’s eight affiliated hospitals. The university also has 19 research institutes and 38 research centers.

Fudan University-Shanghai Medical College (SMC)

Founded in 1927, Shanghai Medical College dates back to Dr. Yan Fuqing. The university remains one of the best medical schools in China, especially after its government-led merger with Fudan University in 2000.

Currently, the school offers two types of doctorates in clinical medicine, which can be completed in six and eight years; the six-year degree program is suitable for international students, as the curriculum is conducted in English.

On the other hand, the eight-year program allows students to simultaneously develop their clinical and scientific skills. There are also opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from prestigious universities such as Harvard and Columbia.

SMC is currently located on a 1,900-square-meter campus in Fenlin. The school collaborates with 10 hospitals where students can do clinical internships.

  1. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) – School of Medicine

Founded in 1952, the school was formed by the merger of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University in 2005.

Zhejiang is located on the Zijinjang campus and is one of the best medical schools in China. It has seven affiliated hospitals and several other research institutes.

The school is known for its outstanding academic achievements and impressive international reputation. According to US News rankings, the university is ranked 10th and 14th in terms of lectures and publications.

Nanjing Medical University (NMU) – Faculty of Medicine

Next on the list of the best medical schools in China is Nanjing Medical University (NMU). It was founded in 1934 as the Jiangsu Province College of Health Policy and Administration, and the name was changed to Nanjing Medical College when it moved to its current location in 1957.

NMU’s Faculty of Medicine was one of the first to offer the MBBS degree in English in 2005. The school is also one of the most selective, with only 100 students admitted each year.

NMU has two campuses and most clinical teaching and research takes place on the main campus in Wutai, which covers an area of 8 hectares.

NMU has four schools of clinical medicine, the first of which is located in the first hospital and specializes in cardiology. The second school has 14 teaching and research departments. The third school specializes in cardiovascular surgery and the fourth school focuses on pediatrics.

Zhongshan School of Medicine, formerly known as the School of Preclinical Medicine, is located on the SYSU campus in Guangzhou. It was founded in 1866 as Boji Medical School, making it the oldest western medical school in the country. Fun fact: this is where Dr Sun Yat-Sen studied medicine.

After several name changes and mergers, SYSU-Zhongshan Medical School was founded in 1985. Like most schools, it offers an eight-year clinical medicine program and a six-year MBBS program.

With over a century of excellence, the school is considered one of the best in the country. This is reflected in a US News ranking of the school, which ranks 34th in the number of clinical medicine publications and 37th in the reputation of regional research.

  1. Central Southern University (CSU) – Xiangan Medical School

CSU – Xiangang Medical School began modestly as Xiangang Medical School. Founded in 1914, it is one of the few institutions offering Western medicine to students in China. It later merged with CSU, which was founded only in 2000.

This medical school in China, located in the Hunan province, is considered one of the public universities that have twice the status of the first.

Located in the mountainous Baiyun district of Guangzhou, it was founded in 1951 as the First Military Medical University. With the approval of the State Council and Central Committee of the Russian Federation, the school was renamed SMU.

The university is known for its School of Clinical Medicine, which offers an eight-year program for future doctors. Students learn through a variety of methods, including classroom sessions, problem-based learning, group sessions, and independent study.
