Bath salt

Bath salts are drugs of abuse that can lead to dangerous addiction symptoms, which have been reported by emergency medical services in the United States. Bath salts are not, as the name implies, healthy bath salts, but dangerous synthetic (“artificial”) cathinone. Cathinone is a stimulant found in a plant called khat, which grows in East Africa and southern Arabia. Bath salt has serious side effects that can be fatal. The effect of this drug is a “high” or “rush” similar to methamphetamine (speed). It is often sold on the street as a cheap alternative to other stimulants such as methamphetamine as well as cocaine.

What’s in bath salts?

The most common ingredient is methylenedioxypyrrolvalone (MDPV), but other stimulants may also be present, such as mephedrone and pyrovalerone MDPV is a member of the phenethylamine family, an amphetamine-like alkaloid native to eastern Africa and southern Arabia. It is structurally similar to cathinone. However, it is believed that mephedrone may be an overdose drug.

MDVP is structurally related to methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and its cathinone derivatives; MDMA is a Schedule I hallucinogen and its cathinone derivatives (cathinone and methcathinone) are also Schedule I hallucinogens. In animal studies, an increase in extracellular dopamine levels was observed 60 minutes after MDVP administration.

Are bath salts illegal in the United States?

In 2011, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced an emergency program to combat the chemicals MDPV, mephedrone, and methylone in bath salts.
